Proposal from The Druker Company
Economic Development/Job Initiative Strategy

Jobs Initiative Strategy

The Druker Company is experienced in undertaking work in communities which require certain efforts to be made concerning resident, minority and women hiring in the construction of projects. Further, we are comfortable in working with the commercial tenants in our buildings to identify permanent employment opportunities for appropriate candidates.

In the course of our due diligence concerning job readiness and employment training programs in Central Ohio, we have appreciated the time given to us by such local experts as Susan Willson Brooks of OSU ExtensionFranklin County service and the coordinator of WORKSource, Edward Krauss of the Greater Columbus Chamber of Commerce, Chrystal Stowe of the Sherman R. Smoot Company and Ellen L. Moss of the Godman Guild settlement house.

Rather than attempt to develop an entirely new job readiness and employment training effort specifically for this development, we propose to partner with existing community service and job training service providers serving the Weinland Park neighborhood and Greater Columbus, respectively.

We would first work with such a community-based organization as the Godman Guild settlement house to identify neighborhood residents needing employment who would be interested in working at the University Gateway Center development, whether in construction or seeking permanent employment, as well as to define the development¹s employment needs.

We believe that an organization such as Godman Guild would be instrumental in locating those community residents who may be entering the workforce for the first time, who may be transitioning from public assistance support or who may otherwise be seeking employment. With appropriate job preparedness training and continuing mentoring and support, the likelihood of success for the employee and the employer is certainly enhanced.

Depending on the nature of the identified employment needs and the interests and aptitudes of the identified community residents, placement in an appropriate, established job training program would ensue. Such placements could include Godman Guild, Youthbuild (see letter of interest in Appendix C), Columbus Works, Inc., the Columbus Public Schools Adult Education program, the Eastland Vocational School District, and other service providers participating in the WORKSource network.

At that time, the development team will be working with local service providers to ensure that other means of support for the community residents who will be working at the project site or the completed development are or will be in place, (e.g., childcare, transportation/available parking, job coaches, etc.).
