The Vision and The Program

The Vision

Envision, if you will, a distinctive urban complex which creates a prominent gateway to one of America's great universities while at the same time providing an inviting and friendly pedestrian realm. Architecture which makes a contemporary statement while being respectful of its environs and the continuity of the street. Picture an active retail setting punctuated by colorful awnings, crisp projecting signs, bright banners and lively illuminated storefront signage. Imagine a walking experience which produces a series of related, meaningful and comfortable outdoor spaces defined by oversized sidewalks, outdoor seating spilling out from cafes and restaurants, handsome street furniture and kiosks and a new University Way, an attractively landscaped walkway and gathering spot.

Here is a place where you can read an art book, leisurely sip a latte and "plug" into the University network at the two level bookstore and its cafe. Where you can attend a foreign film festival and eat freshly cooked popcorn. Where you can park in a secure, well-lit parking garage, stop by the Around Town information/ticket kiosk before picking up some "grab and go" at the green grocer. Where you may try a yoga or an aerobics class at the fitness center overlooking High Street, followed by a smoothie at the ground level juice bar. Or shop for athletic gear or hiking boots and then enjoy lunch at the salad cafe, serving 56 different salads, creatively prepared and inexpensively priced. Or, perhaps, for more exotic fare, try a falafel at the Middle Eastern eatery. Or take a burger break from "cramming" at the 24-hour diner at the corner of 11th and High.

Have a steak and brew outside on the terrace with a date at either the bar and grille or the sports bar before strolling down University Way to the dance club. Or just enjoy a laid back evening at the jazz club. And on the way home, check out the centrally located Gateway Tower, a decorative spire whose illuminated alternating colors foretell the weather and tell of gridiron victory. You may come by foot or by car, from the campus, the neighborhood or from around town. Or just walk downstairs from the new university office space or from your apartment on High Street.
