The University Community Association presented its annual Pavey Award for outstanding service to the University District by a resident to Ron Hupman, immediate past president of the University Area Commission and long-time chair of the commission's Zoning Committee.
UCA also unveiled a stone marker and plaque in memory of the late Mike Davies, a civic leader in the Northwood Park neighborhood, and presented the annual Oscar Award to Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman.
The awards were presented at UCA’s annual ice cream social on August 12 at the new Evans Scholars house, 121 E. 16th Avenue. The event also was a publication party for the new pictorial history book, The Ohio State University Neighborhoods, which was compiled and written by Doreen Uhas-Sauer and Stuart Koblentz.
“It is good to be honored for doing for many years what you feel is important,” Mr. Hupman told his neighbors in accepting the Pavey Award. The award is named for the late Dr. Charles Pavey, a physician and Ohio State faculty member who lived his whole life in the University District.
The stone marker and plaque for Mr. Davies will be installed in the memorial garden adjacent to the Tuttle Park Recreation Center.
Megan Blackford, deputy director of the Columbus Public Service Department, accepted the Oscar Award on behalf of Mayor Coleman, who was not able to attend. Ms. Blackford expressed appreciation for the long-standing partnership between city government and the University District. The Oscar Award is presented annually for outstanding service to the University District by a non-resident.
