Highlights.

 

  • 2004 Outreach Scholarship Conference a Huge Success.š Thirty-six faculty and staff from Ohio State just returned from the 2004 Outreach Scholarship conference at Penn State.š It was an excellent conference that focused on the scholarship of the work we are doing, and provided a wealth of ideas on how we can strengthen our work.š Please mark your calendar for next year’s conference, October 2-5 in Athens, Georgia.š The call for proposals for that conference, “Transformation through Engagement” is available on the web at www.outreachscholarship.org.š Proposals are due in February.

 

  • Outreach and Engagement Assembly Meeting October 22.š The Outreach and Engagement Assembly meets twice a year and includes representatives from all the colleges/VP units and major O&E initiatives.š This group meets to provide advice an input concerning our efforts to move outreach and engagement forward at Ohio State, and to share information among the participants.š The October 22 Assembly meeting will focus on steps our office are taking to implement the recommendations from the Outreach Review and a discussion with the principle investigators of the Excellence in Engagement grants concerning the lessons they have learned through implementing their grant.š If you have any questions about the Assembly, or are interested in becoming involved, pleased contact bruns.1@osu.edu.

  • Learning Work Connection at Ohio State announces FREE Ohio Regional training workshops this November for its new publication:š Focused Futures Youth Development System Builder.š Local youth councils, WIA youth administrators and youth service providers will find Focused Futures an essential resource in designing and implementing successful WIA youth programs.š Workshop participants may choose to attend one or two days for training.š Each workshop will run from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm and will include continental breakfast and lunch.š Topics include:š

**Day One:š Program Design for Performance zeroes in on the connection between youth development principles, WIA performance measures and the 10 required elements.

**Day Two:š Procurement for Performance illustrates how focusing on performance from RFP through contracting ensures that youth programs deliver results.

  • Imagining America Conference - Making Knowledge: Democracy, Cultural Partnerships, and the University.š This conference showcases new research produced through cultural partnerships. **Zibabwean Sculptures To Be Featured at Franklin Park Conservatory.šš Opens October 2nd, 2004. šThe Franklin Park Conservatory will be hosting a large exhibit of Shona sculpture, from Zimbabwe, entitled Chapungu, over the next year.  There will be Zimbabwean artists in residence throughout the year, demonstrations and classes for youth, community symposiums with local African-American artists, and programs with groups ranging from the Columbus Zoo to the Thurber House writing academy.  For more information: www.fpconservatory.org.

**NSF is soliciting proposals for funding under the Information Technology Experiences for Students and Teachers program. This program is designed to increase the opportunities for students and teachers to use information technologies within the context of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Approximately $20 million in FY 2005 funding is expected to be available for 8-10 awards. The categories of proposers identified in the Grant Proposal Guide are eligible to submit proposals.š Application Deadline:š Required preliminary proposals are due November 1, 2004; full proposals are due February 9, 2005. **Department of LaborThe Employment and Training Administration invites applications for demonstration grant funds to address labor shortages, innovative training strategies, and other workforce challenges in the Healthcare and Biotechnology industries. Projects should involve a strategic partnership between the public workforce system, business and industry representatives, and education and training providers such as community colleges. Approximately $10 million is available for awards expected to range from $750,000 to $1 million. Applicants must provide resources equivalent to at least 50 percent of the grant award amount as matching funds. Eligible are public, private for-profit and private nonprofit organizations, including faith-based and community organizations. Application Deadline:š November 2, 2004. **Department of EducationThe Office of Postsecondary Education invites applications for funding under the International Research and Studies program. This program provides grants to conduct research and studies that improve and strengthen instruction in modern foreign languages, area studies and other international fields.  Approximately $1.9 million in FY 2005 funding is expected to be available for 17 awards averaging $112,000 per year for up to three years. Eligible are public and private agencies, organizations, institutions and individuals. Application Deadline:š November 12, 2004. **Small Business Administration (SBA)SBA's Office of Advocacy is seeking graduate-level papers analyzing an issue of relevance to small businesses or entrepreneurs. Advocacy will select three papers for presentation at its Doctoral Student Paper Workshop in January 2005. Papers winning first place will be posted on the working paper section of Advocacy’s website, and the author will receive $500 from the United States Association for Small Business & Entrepreneurship. Second and third place authors will receive $200 and $100 cash, respectively. Application Deadline:š Papers are due November 19, 2004.
