April 30th Keynote Speaker - Francille M. Firebaugh, Vice Provost for Land Grant Affairs and Special Assistant to the President, Cornell University.

Dr. Firebaugh will give the first annual James F. Patterson Land-Grant University Lecture at this University-wide conference.  Ohio State - The 21st Century Model for Outreach and Engagement is the theme of the conference that will be held from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm at the Ohio Union.  In addition to Dr. Firebaugh's presentation, there will be an address by President Holbrook, breakout sessions and poster displays featuring the innovative engagement work of units.   Register online at www.outreach.osu.edu by April 16th.  Please forward this announcement to colleagues and encourage them to join you at the conference!

College Annual Reports.   As a part of the College Annual Reports, deans again this winter are being asked to report on their college's engagement efforts through the O&E database. http://www.osu.edu/outreachprojects/index.php.   Many of you updated your projects this fall (and the date of last update is noted on the description).   We encourage you to update or add your engagement efforts in the database, or to work with your college office to ensure that your efforts are reflected in the college's annual report.

Highlights.


Join us for the March 8th Lunch Bunch!  Catherine Girves (community leader) and Susan Colbert (OSU Extension Agent in University District) have been partnering with community organizations on new initiatives in the district.   These include expanded credit union services, youth programming, community collaboration, and much more.  Come and learn about these new efforts and how you can become involved.  The meeting will be held at Campus Partners, 1824 North High Street   (parking is available across the street in the Ohio Union Parking Garage), 12-1:30 pm.  Bring your own brown bag lunch.  Drinks and dessert will be provided.   Please RSVP to Barbara Millisor, 688-3041, or Millisor.1@osu.edu.

IMPORTANT DATES IN MARCH. 

·          Celebration of Japan Festival.    Come and celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Celebration of Japan Festival! The festival brings together a diverse mixture of traditional and contemporary artistic traditions from the Land of the Rising Sun, including dance, music, and theater performances, visual art demonstrations, and a variety of hands-on activities to engage even the youngest festival-goers!  Admission is FREE!  More info: http://www.dublinarts.org/events/coj.html

·          The Ohio Learning-Work Connection supported by a grant from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services is holding WIA Regional Learning Exchanges which consist of one-day regional meetings designed to allow WIA youth councils, youth service vendors, and other youth-serving organizations an opportunity to share information and promising practices with other youth practitioners in their areas.  In addition, the exchanges will feature current information about WIA reauthorization as it affects youth programming. The exchanges will be held from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm at the following locations:

        March 11, Baker University Center, Ohio University, Athens, OH

**OSU Reading Recovery and Early Literacy Inc. is now offering its state-of-the-art training facilities for rental. Centrally located at 807 Kinnear Road, the Literacy Collaborative Conference Center hosts groups from 5 to 120. Grant Opportunities.

**The EPA invites applications for funding under the P3 Award program to support research in sustainable solutions to environmental challenges. Projects may be conducted in a wide range of categories, including agriculture, built environment, ecosystem, materials and chemicals, energy, resources and water. Approximately $500,000 is expected to be available for 50 awards of up to $10,000 each. Institutions of higher education located in the U.S. are eligible to apply as the recipient of a grant to support teams of undergraduate or graduate students.  Application Deadline:  March 25, 2004. **NSF, NIH and ED jointly invite proposals for research projects to improve student learning and achievement in preK-12 science or preK-12 mathematics, with an emphasis on middle and high school. Technology should be a part of the intervention or used in an essential manner in the analysis of the intervention.  Application Deadline:  The categories of proposers identified in the Grant Proposal Guide are eligible to submit proposals, which are due April 30, 2004. **The National Telecommunications and Information Administration invites applications for funding under the Technology Opportunities Program. This program supports funding demonstrations of new telecommunications and information technology applications for the provision of educational, health care, or public information in the nation's public and nonprofit sectors. Approximately $12.9 million is available for awards. Cost-sharing of up to 50 percent is required. Eligible are nonprofit entities, public sector organizations and state, local and tribal governments.   Application Deadline:  April 27, 2004. Sites for the 3-hour workshops include: Atlanta (March 1), Boston (March 3), Chicago (March 5), Dallas (March 1), Gaithersburg (March 9), Los Angeles (March 5), and Seattle (March 3). **NSF invites proposals for Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship program, which seeks to establish innovative new models for graduate education and training in a fertile environment for collaborative research that transcends traditional disciplinary boundaries. Approximately $30.8 million is expected to be available for 38 awards of up to $3 million per award over five years. Only academic institutions in the U.S., its territories or possessions that grant the Ph.D. degree in the sciences and engineering may submit proposals. Application Deadline:   Required preliminary proposals are due April 29, 2004; full proposals, which are by invitation only, will be due Oct. 29, 2004. **The Lemelson-MIT Program for Invention and Innovation supports InvenTeams, which are formed by high school students, their teachers and industry mentors for the purpose of inventing something of value for their school or local communities. Grants of up to $10,000 each are awarded annually to teams under the supervision of science, mathematics or technology teacher applicants. Teachers from public, private, charter and vocational programs are eligible. Application Deadline:   May 7, 2004. More information is available at: http://web.mit.edu/invent/www/InvenTeam/info.html
