Ohio State to receive regional award for outreach work in University District

The national leadership of The Ohio State University in its outreach and engagement work has been recognized for the second time in two years.

Ohio State has been selected as one of six regional winners of the 2008 W.K. Kellogg Foundation Engagement Award sponsored by the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges (NASULGC).  The award recognizes Ohio State’s work in the University District with a particular focus on the initiatives involving Campus Partners and other key stakeholders in the Weinland Park neighborhood.

Among these key stakeholders are the City of Columbus, Weinland Park Community Civic Association, University Area Commission, Godman Guild Association, Ohio State University Extension, Ohio State's Schoenbaum Family Center, Community Properties of Ohio Management Services and Wagenbrenner Development Company.

Ohio State President E. Gordon Gee delivered a public lecture on April 15 in which he outlined the university’s goals in outreach and engagement as a public land-grant university.  Following the lecture, the University District partners were recognized for their involvement with Ohio State in the efforts to revitalize the neighborhoods.

As a regional winner of the Kellogg Foundation Engagement Award, Ohio State is a finalist for the 2008 C. Peter Magrath University Community Engagement Award.  The national recipient of this award will be announced at the NASULGC annual meeting in November.

Ohio State was a regional winner last year – the first year of the award competition – for a submission which focused on the university’s educational partnerships through the Metro High School, the Schoenbaum Family Center and the Battelle Center for Mathematics and Science Education Policy.
