Public
safety in the University District
Public safety and crime
prevention are priorities for all of the stakeholders in the University
District, including the City of Columbus,
The Ohio State University and neighborhood civic leaders. The Columbus Division of Police patrols the
neighborhoods off the university campus, while University Police has
jurisdiction on university property.
The two police agencies cooperate closely and have conducted joint
patrols periodically to deal with weekend parties and burglary
prevention. The city and the
university also jointly fund the Community Crime Patrol, which uses paid and
trained civilian staff members to patrol in pairs throughout much of the
University District, as well as several other neighborhoods of Columbus.
Community-police cooperation is
fostered through the University Area Safety Committee, which brings together
all of the stakeholders on a monthly basis to discuss public safety issues,
and the University Area Crime Stoppers, which is an affiliate of the Central
Ohio Crime Stoppers. The university
also sponsors a number of public safety activities, including the Rape
Education and Prevention Program and the Student Safety and Escort Service.
