Survey of Attitudes and Preferences of Residence Hall Students

Winter Quarter 1999

In cooperation with the Campus Partners Student Advisory Board, resident advisors in a residence hall on the Columbus campus of The Ohio State University distributed this written questionnaire to their student residents during winter quarter 1999. The questionnaire surveyed Ohio State students to determine their attitudes about High Street adjacent to the university. Responses were received from 54 students. All but three of the respondents had attended Ohio State less than one year; nearly all were 18 or 19 years old; and more than 88 percent of the respondents were female. A similar survey was distributed by electronic mail to a statistically representative sample of Ohio State students during January 1999. Where appropriate, the results of this written survey will be compared to the more representative responses from the e-mail survey.

1. Reflecting on your experience as an Ohio State student, please rate your satisfaction with the following aspects of High Street in the University District. Please rate each aspect from 1 to 7 with "1" being "very unsatisfied" and "7" being "very satisfied." The mean (average) response is listed. Note that the lowest satisfaction is with parking availability and cleanliness of the environment. The highest satisfaction is with entertainment/ social activities and cultural diversity. In the e-mail survey, parking availability and cleanliness of the environment also rated lowest in satisfaction, while cultural diversity and retail shopping convenience rated highest.

Listed are the percentage of people who responded to question 9 and selected each option. Many respondents selected more than one option, therefore the percentages add up to over 100%. Compared with the e-mail survey, the respondents to this survey were much less concerned about available parking (29.6% versus 54.8% and somewhat less concerned about the variety of businesses (44.4% versus 64.4%).

If those offices were located with parking in a new development in the area of 11th Avenue and High Street, do you think that students would find that location more or less convenient?
