City and Campus Partners reach agreement on Columbus Coated Fabrics site

Columbus City Council on Oct. 16 approved an agreement between the city and Campus Partners on the acquisition, demolition, remediation and potential redevelopment of the Columbus Coated Fabrics site along the eastern edge of the Weinland Park neighborhood.  Manufacturing on the site was shut down in 2001, and the owner of the property is in bankruptcy court.  The site has been plagued with numerous fires and other public safety issues.  In an editorial this morning, The Columbus Dispatch compliments Campus Partners and the city for working together to deal with this problem property.  For more information on the agreement between the city and Campus Partners, click on www.campuspartners.osu.edu.

Refuse and code enforcement committees to meet Oct. 31

The Campus Partners Public Service Committee on refuse collection and recycling and the University District Code Enforcement Task Force will conduct a joint meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 31, in room 100 of the Northwood-High Building, 2231 N. High St.  On the agenda is a preview of street and utility improvements along High Street between Lane and Arcadia avenues which may begin in 2007 and a report on a pilot program to control rats.  The meeting is open to the public.

Meanwhile, the city's Refuse Collection Division has produced a final report on the 10th annual special collection of bulk refuse in the University District from late August through mid-September during the move-out and move-in of students.  In that period, the city removed 2,587 tons of refuse.  The personnel costs were $95,000; equipment costs were $98,000; and disposal costs were $117,000.  The total costs were $310,000.  This commitment to removing the trash and maintaining the appearance of the alleys is critical to the quality of life in these neighborhoods.

University District stakeholders consider music festival and Campus Hops

Representatives of the Wexner Center, Ohio State's College of the Arts, University Community Business Association, Ohio Union, South Campus Gateway and Campus Partners have been meeting monthly to discuss joint efforts to promote the vitality of the many cultural, educational and entertainment venues in the University District.  They sponsored the first Campus Hop along High Street on a Thursday evening last July.  Now they are discussing the possibility of a university-High Street music festival in April 2007 -- with the central attraction being the 30th annual Ohio State Jazz Festival -- and the possibility of three Campus Hops next summer.  If you have an organization or business interested in participating in the planning of these events, please contact Peter Lou, student program manager, or Steve Sterrett, community relations director, at Campus Partners at (614) 294-7300.

UCBA and UDO plan web site for University District

The University Community Business Association and the University District Organization have engaged Phil Marr, a local graphic designer, to develop a web site that will link people to opportunities to "live, learn, work and play" in the University District.  The site will promote events and activities, link to key sites at Ohio State and in the neighborhoods, and help brand the neighborhoods of the University District as diverse and vibrant communities.  The web site has emerged from the work of a UCBA committee, led by Alyssa Booms, branch manager of the Fifth Third Bank in the Ohio Union.  For more information, please contact Pasquale Grado, executive director of UCBA, at (614) 299-2866.

Summit Church seeks participants in focus groups on attraction to churches

Summit United Methodist Church, 82 E. 16th Ave., is conducting market research to determine what might attract people to attend or support the work of a neighborhood church in the University District.  As part of the research, Summit is inviting permanent residents of the University District or Clintonville to participate in a focus group discussion at the church on Wednesday, Nov. 1, either form 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. or 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.  Another focus group will be held for Ohio State faculty, staff and graduate students on Monday, Oct. 30, at the same times.  Each person will receive $25 for participating in a focus group.  The research is being conducted by Summit member Melinda Swan.  Anyone interested in participating in a focus group should RSVP to Ms. Swan at <melinswan@aol.com>.
