Remembrance service scheduled for Bill Hall

A public remembrance ceremony for Bill Hall, vice president for student affairs at Ohio State, will be held on Saturday (Dec. 3) at 11 a.m. in Mershon Auditorium, 1871 N. High St.  Bill died of cancer last Sunday.  Doors will open at 10 a.m.  No tickets or reservations are needed, and free parking will be available in the Ohio Union Parking Garage.  The non-denominational service will feature reflections from Ohio State President Karen Holbrook, Mayor Michael Coleman, a representative of the Ohio Army National Guard, and representatives of the Student Affairs staff and the student body.  The service is expected to last about an hour and a reception will follow at the Ohio Union, 1739 N. High St.

Among his many contributions to Ohio State and the community, he served as chair of the Safety Coordinating Committee from late 1997 until early 2001.  The committee later changed its name to the University Area Safety Committee.  He worked side-by-side with many police officers, university staff members and neighbors in dealing with student riots, visiting dignitaries, African American Heritage Festival, and other major events.  At the time of his death, he was vice-chair of the Campus Partners Board of Trustees.  He gave careful attention to the concerns of the permanent residents of the University District.

For more information on the remembrance ceremony and on Bill's career, you may go to the Office of Student Affairs web site at http://www.studentaffairs.osu.edu. Please read the many tributes and reflections that Bill's friends and colleagues have posted on the web site's "guest book," and please consider adding your own thoughts about Bill.  The web site also has information on where to send cards to Bill's family and how to make contribution to The Bill Hall Memorial Fund for Pancreatic Cancer Research.

Holiday lights will sparkle in University District

Ohio State's Community Ambassadors, with support from Coca-Cola, are sponsoring the third annual "Light Up the Night," an off-campus holiday lighting competition among students and student organizations.  Students had to register their house or apartment by Nov. 28 with on-line voting for the best displays to run from Dec. 1-4.  Best Buy has donated major prizes for the winning houses and apartments.  Among the categories are "Best Greek," "Best Apartment," "Santa Buckeye Award" (for most school spirit), and "Clark Griswold Award" (for most lights per square foot).

"Light Up the Night" will be kicked off with a community celebration on Thursday (Dec. 1) from 6:30 to 9 p.m.  Students, residents and the public are invited to walk or drive through the predominantly student neighborhood to view the displays.  You may visit stations at one of these locations for free cookies and hot chocolate and a list of all houses and apartments participating in "Light up the Night":

-- West 9th Avenue and Worthington Street,

-- East 12th Avenue and Indianola,

-- East 15th Avenue and Indianola,

-- East 18th Avenue and Waldeck,

-- Tuller Street and Frambes Avenue,

-- East Norwich Avenue and Waldeck (north side of street).

The Community Ambassador program is sponsored by the Office of Off-Campus Student Services and Undergraduate Student Government.  One or two ambassadors live on each street and try to build a sense of community among the residents, promote public safety and share information about neighborhood services.  Each ambassador receives a monthly stipend.

The service organization Ohio Staters, Incorporated, also is into holiday lights.  Ohio Staters, with assistance from Ohio State's Office of Physical Facilities, will hold the third annual "Light Up the Lake."  The members will decorate Mirror Lake hollow with more than 35,000 lights.  The public is invited to attend the brief lighting ceremony on Thursday (Dec. 1) at 6 p.m. in the Browning Amphitheater.  Cookies and beverages will be served.  The lights will be turned on each evening through the end of winter quarter.
