Neighbors discuss Columbus Coated Fabrics site

Campus Partners has been in discussions with the Wagenbrenner Company for several months as a potential private development partner in the redevelopment of the Columbus Coated Fabrics site.  Robert Caldwell, president of the Weinland Park Community Civic Association, convened meetings Jan. 31 and Feb. 1 for neighborhood civic leaders to talk with the Mark and Eric Wagenbrenner, two brothers who are principals in the Wagenbrenner Company, about the Columbus Coated Fabrics site.  Each meeting attracted about 25 people.  The Wagenbrenners explained their experience with redevelopment of other “brownfield” sites in Columbus, outlined the timetable to apply for state funds to clean up the Columbus Coated Fabrics site, and indicated their support for a mixture of housing and greenspace on the property.  Those in attendance appeared to be generally supportive of the Wagenbrenners’ approach.

The Columbus Coated Fabrics site also will be on the agenda of the monthly meeting of the Weinland Park Community Civic Association on Wednesday, Feb. 28, at 6:30 p.m. in the Weinland Park Elementary School, 211 E. Seventh Ave.  Joseph Reidy, Campus Partners’ environmental attorney, and representatives of the environmental monitoring firm HzW and the demolition contractor Champion Environmental Services will talk about the impending demolition of the Columbus Coated Fabrics’ buildings.  (Champion tentatively has been selected to do the demolition.  The demolition contract hasn’t been executed yet.)

Promotion of the University District

Business, civic and university leaders on Feb. 14 launched a new web site to promote the neighborhoods of the University District as great places to “live, learn, work and play.”  Visit the web site at www.universitydistrict.org.

Nearly three dozen musical performances are already scheduled for the first Campus Music Hop on Thursday through Sunday, April 12-15.  The centerpiece of the music hop will be the 30th Annual Ohio State Jazz Festival.  Other events will reflect a wide range of musical styles with performances at restaurants and nightspots along High Street and at South Campus Gateway.  Among the performances at Summit United Methodist Church will be a drum circle, choral concert and jazz mass.  The complete schedule will be available in March at www.universitydistrict.org. Represented on the Campus Hop Planning Committee are the University Community Business Association, Wexner Center for the Arts, the College of the Arts, Ohio Union, South Campus Gateway, Campus Partners and Summit Church.  In addition, the committee is planning three one-day Campus Hops this summer.

The web site and the Campus Hop events represent a new effort by stakeholders to work cooperatively to promote the educational and cultural amenities, the commercial vitality, the rental housing market and the opportunities for homeownership in the neighborhoods of the University District.

Update on public safety

Due to inclement weather and the closing of the university, the monthly meeting of the University Area Safety Committee was cancelled on Feb. 14.  The committee will hold its next meeting on Wednesday, March 14, at 3:30 p.m. in the first floor conference room of 33 W. 11th Ave.  Among the items on the agenda will be reports from University Police on a recent laptop computer case, from Columbus Police on the problem of aggressive panhandling along High Street, and from neighborhood civic leaders on public safety discussions in the Weinland Park neighborhood.

The meeting of the University Area Crime Stoppers Board that had been scheduled for Feb. 15 also was cancelled due to the weather.  The board is trying to reschedule its meeting for later in February.

Meanwhile, Campus Partners staff has been working with neighborhood civic leaders on a possible public awareness campaign focusing on graffiti vandalism.  University Area Crime Stoppers agreed to help fund a campaign to highlight the negative impact of graffiti on neighborhoods and to encourage the reporting of those committing graffiti.  Keep Columbus Beautiful also can help with such a campaign.  Campus Partners convened a meeting of civic leaders and design staff from University Relations on Jan. 25 to discuss the goals of such a campaign.  Staff from University Relations agreed to assist in preparing a public awareness campaign about graffiti vandalism which would target Ohio State students.  If the campaign has success, it could be broadened to reach a wider audience.

Update on refuse and code enforcement

The University District Code Enforcement Task Force and the Campus Partners Public Service Committee on refuse collection and recycling will hold a joint meeting on Tuesday, March 13, at 2 p.m. in the Northwood-High Building, 2231 N. High St.  The meeting of the code enforcement task force’s Litter Subcommittee on Feb. 13 was cancelled due to inclement weather.  Catherine Girves, co-chair of the subcommittee, is preparing a series of possible steps which can be taken to combat litter once the litter study begun last fall is completed.  A Work-Study student at Ohio State is entering the data from the litter survey conducted last September during the university’s Community Commitment Day.

Publicity for South Campus Gateway

The weekly newspaper Alive! published its "Best of Columbus" feature in the Feb. 15 edition.  The feature is based on a readers' poll.  South Campus Gateway was voted best in two categories:  “Best New Building/Redevelopment” and “Best Rehab/Redevelopment Project.”  John Ross, a reporter with Alive!, conducted an interview with Kent Cherny, student member of the Campus Partners Board of Directors, to talk about the impact of Gateway on the neighborhood.  In connection with the newspaper story, Mr. Ross conducted a videotaped interview with Jerry Johnson, marketing director of Gateway, and Steve Sterrett, community relations director of Campus Partners, on Feb. 16 for placement on the Alive! website.  The four-minute video story can be seen at www.columbusalive.com. Click on "The Pulse."

Other University District venues which won “Best of Columbus” honors were Used Kids Records, 1980 N. High St., for “Best Place to Buy CDs”; String Shoppe, 1710 N. High St., for “Best Guitar/Instrument Store”; Dick’s Den, 2417 N. High St., for “Best Place for Live Jazz”; Bernie’s Distillery, 1896 N. High St., and High Five Bar & Grill, 1227 N. High St., in several bar and entertainment categories, including a tie for “Best Place for Hip Hop.”

South Campus Gateway was the cover story in the Feb. 14 edition of U Weekly.  The headline tells it all – “Old vs. New: Students debate South Campus transition from trashy to trendy.”  The story doesn’t contain new information, yet informs readers that “South Campus was once known to be a revolting, nasty, dirty wasteland of human society, but people loved it.”  A woman student, however, notes that “the stores [at Gateway] seem clean and maintain a professional, urban flair.  They make off-campus stand out and really add a positive edge to the filthy segments of High Street.”

Drexel Gateway Theater will show big basketball game

The Drexel Gateway Theater will present the Ohio State-Wisconsin men’s basketball game in one of the theater’s biggest auditoriums this Sunday, Feb. 25.  Doors open an hour before the 4 p.m. tip-off.  Admission is free.  The theater will offer specials on beverages, hot dogs and pizza.  Food and drinks can be taken inside the auditorium.

New duties for Campus Partners staff

The Board of Trustees of the Science and Technology Campus Corporation (Scitech) last month named Terry Foegler as president and CEO.  Scitech is a non-profit affiliate of Ohio State established 10 years ago to develop the university’s research park along Kinnear Road.  While this is a significant new responsibility for Mr. Foegler, he will continue to spend the majority of his time directing the activities of Campus Partners.  Doug Aschenbach has been promoted to executive vice president of Campus Partners to help relieve Mr. Foegler of some day-to-day administrative responsibility, but Mr. Foegler will be fully engaged as Campus Partners considers a number of significant projects in the coming months.

University leaders asked Mr. Foegler to become involved with Scitech because of his extensive experience in land planning, economic development and public-private partnerships, as well as his understanding of university and city processes.  A number of planning and development decisions must be made as Scitech grows and as the city and other partners implement a vision for the 315 Research and Technology Corridor.
