The University Area Safety Committee met Sept. 14 to review
preparations for the beginning of autumn quarter at
Columbus Police and University Police are resuming joint patrols in
the predominantly student neighborhood this fall, usually beginning about 11
p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. Columbus Police acknowledged that
there were about 100 robberies in the North High Street area over the
summer. There were a variety of
suspects and methods. Police have
made a number of arrests, and there has been a significant reduction in the
robbery reports. Police also said
there have been a number of burglaries in the predominantly student
neighborhood. The police are
using directed patrols to try to stop these crimes.
Kay Bea Jones, professor of architecture at Ohio State and a resident
of the Indianola Forest, presented data to the committee showing that the
number of homeowners in her neighborhood have been cut almost in half over
the past 10 years. She believes
that the drop in homeowners has a negative impact on public safety and the
quality of life in the neighborhood.
The next meeting of the safety committee will be Wednesday, Oct. 12,
at 3:30 p.m. in |
